You know the Standards for Excellence. Now let's get specific.

Standards in Focus is a new series of focused, three-hour trainings built directly from the Standards for Excellence educational resource packets, the same nationally recognized framework your organization may already be working toward, examined one topic at a time. Where the two-day Standards for Excellence course gives you the full picture, these sessions are designed to zero in on particular areas of nonprofit ethics, governance, and operations so you can walk away with actionable tools and clarity on the issues your organization is actively navigating.

Each training is its own complete learning experience. You don't need to have completed the two-day course to participate, these trainings stand on their own and are open to nonprofit staff, board members, and leaders at any stage of their standards journey.

Course Description

Too many nonprofits stay on the sidelines of public policy because of myths about what they can and can’t do. Built from the Standards for Excellence educational packet on Foundations of Advocacy and Public Policy, this training clears the air and lays the groundwork. Participants work through the difference between education, advocacy, and lobbying; what the law allows for 501(c)(3) organizations; how to build an organizational advocacy policy; and how to stay nonpartisan while showing up fully for the communities you serve. Your organization’s voice belongs in the room — this session helps you use it.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Distinguish between public education, advocacy, and lobbying and dispel common myths about what nonprofits are legally permitted to do.
  2. Describe the federal rules governing allowable lobbying for 501(c)(3) organizations, including a basic overview of the Insubstantial Part Test and the 501(h) Expenditure Election.
  3. Explain the purpose and key elements of an organizational advocacy policy and how it clarifies roles, focus, and decision-making authority.
  4. Apply nonpartisanship standards to real-world scenarios and identify what is permissible, risky, or prohibited for 501(c)(3) organizations.
  5. Identify concrete first steps for building an advocacy presence that is mission-aligned, legally sound, and community-grounded.
