[OKC] Standards in Focus: Protecting Your Organization’s Integrity
You know the Standards for Excellence. Now let's get specific.
Standards in Focus is a new series of focused, three-hour trainings built directly from the Standards for Excellence educational resource packets, the same nationally recognized framework your organization may already be working toward, examined one topic at a time. Where the two-day Standards for Excellence course gives you the full picture, these sessions are designed to zero in on particular areas of nonprofit ethics, governance, and operations so you can walk away with actionable tools and clarity on the issues your organization is actively navigating.
Each training is its own complete learning experience. You don't need to have completed the two-day course to participate, these trainings stand on their own and are open to nonprofit staff, board members, and leaders at any stage of their standards journey.
Course Description
Conflicts of interest don’t always look like corruption , sometimes they look like hiring a qualified candidate who happens to be a family member, or accepting a vendor’s gift after years of business. Built from the Standards for Excellence educational packet on Conflicts of Interest, this training zeroes in on how to identify conflicts before they become problems and build the policies that keep your organization protected. Through real-world case studies, participants work through scenarios involving nepotism, vendor relationships, and gift acceptance — learning not just the rules, but how to apply them consistently.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Define key conflict of interest terms — including duality of interest, private inurement, and fiduciary duty — and explain their relevance to nonprofit governance.
- Identify common scenarios that raise conflict of interest concerns and distinguish actual, potential, and perceived conflicts through case study analysis.
- Describe the essential elements of a conflict of interest policy, including disclosure, independent review, and annual affirmation procedures.
- Outline the steps for developing and implementing a policy that meets IRS expectations and Standards for Excellence best practices.
- Explain how conflict of interest policies connect to whistleblower protections and gifts-to-staff policies to build a culture of organizational integrity.
