[TULSA] Standards in Focus: Plan Before You Need To
OKCNP - Tulsa Legacy Plaza Training Room
5330 East 31st Street Suite 200 Tulsa, OK 74135 United States
You know the Standards for Excellence. Now let’s get specific. Standards in Focus is a new series of focused, three-hour trainings built directly from the Standards for Excellence educational resource packets, the same nationally recognized framework your organization may already be working toward, examined one topic at a time. Where the two-day Standards for Excellence course gives you the full picture, these sessions are designed to zero in on particular areas of nonprofit ethics, governance, and operations so you can walk away with actionable tools and clarity on the issues your organization is actively navigating. Available in person and virtually, each training is its own complete learning experience. You don’t need to have completed the two-day course to participate, these trainings stand on their own and are open to nonprofit staff, board members, and leaders at any stage of their standards journey.
Course Description
What happens to your organization when a key leader walks out the door, planned, sudden, or somewhere in between? For most nonprofits, that question is uncomfortable because it hasn’t been answered yet. Drawn from the Standards for Excellence educational packet on Succession Planning, this training confronts that reality head-on. Participants will work through organizational assessment, knowledge management, leadership pipeline development, and the trade-offs between internal and external succession, covering both emergency and planned departure scenarios.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Articulate why succession planning is a board-level governance responsibility, not just an HR function.
- Conduct a basic organizational assessment that identifies leadership vulnerabilities and strategic considerations relevant to transition.
- Apply knowledge management principles to document critical institutional knowledge before a departure occurs.
- Differentiate between emergency and planned departure scenarios and identify what a succession plan must address for each.
- Evaluate the trade-offs of internal versus external succession and describe the steps in a structured transition process.
